8/10/2022 We believe in the power of "yet"We believe in the power of a growth mindset, as in we don't know how to do something YET. With practice and time spent creating, artists will learn and grow this year, building on previous art knowledge and adding new skills. We are excited to get started!
8/10/2022 the artists are back!It has been an absolute pleasure to welcome students back to Crabapple Crossing. We are learning routines and procedures and discussing art classroom expectations. Students are also preparing for International Dot Day, championed by author Peter H. Reynolds. Look for our celebrations of courage and creativity displayed at school for this year's celebration on September 15th.
1/19/2022 sharing art with our communityThis month, over 80 student artworks are featured in an exhibit at the Milton Public Library. This yearly event encourages students and their families to visit our public library, apply for library cards, and enjoy our amazing art! Here are photos from the exhibit. These are the students whose artwork is featured in the exhibit, grouped by grade level.
9/20/2021 the artists are back!Students have been back in the Art Room for seven weeks already! We have been busy learning routines, drawing and painting. We continue to follow the Georgia Department of Education Standards of Excellence for Visual Arts, with each grade level reviewing previous learning while we dig into their current grade level standards.
Below you will find the tile wall that was recently installed outside of the Media Center. Last year's fifth grade students and the Crabapple Crossing staff members each created a "one word" artwork that was transformed into a ceramic tile. These tiles were then used to create our latest hallway collaborative artwork. So proud of everyone involved! 5/2/2021 There's Never enough time!As we prepare to wrap up another year of learning and creating in the Art Room, it seems the time passes more quickly each school year. While we pivoted from face-to-face to remote learning and back a few times this school year, students continued to follow our Georgia Standards of Excellence for Visual Arts. Many of our artworks are completed during multiple art class periods and although this took longer than in previous years, I am so proud of our student artists and all they accomplished! We are painting and glazing our clay sculptures in 4th and 5th grade. 2nd and 3rd grade artists are weaving baskets. Kindergarten and 1st grade artists are stitching with yarn on burlap.
The CCES Class of 2021 is also currently creating artwork that will be included in a tile wall outside of our Media Center. The annual 5th Grade Legacy Project is always an important part of end of the year activities. Thanks to grants from the City of Milton and Cobb EMC, the courtyard outside of the Art Room will soon include new perennial plants. This project will attract butterflies and bees and provide our students with a front row seat to the changes that occur each season in a garden. When we have visitors in the building once again, be sure to check it out! Here is a sample of our 5th grade bobblehead clay sculptures. Aren't they great? 1/7/2021 Happy New Year!We are learning remotely for these first few days of the second semester, with Mrs. Steffensen back to teaching from home. While this is certainly not ideal, it has been wonderful to connect with students and create ART together! Looking forward to getting back to our regularly scheduled lessons, but in the meantime, we are enjoying the book Snowmen at Work. The husband and wife team of Mark and Caralyn Buehner created the Snowman series of books, along with many others. Students are then creating a landscape drawing using the tricks that artists use to show depth. Size variation, placement on the picture plane, and one-point perspective are some of the techniques we are using to flex our ART muscles this week. Practicing these techniques helps us review art concepts and become even better ARTISTS!
12/1/2020 Learning and cReating ContinuesWe are doing our best to continue with our grade level, standards based Art curriculum. Social distancing and increased cleaning protocols have changed our routines in the Art room, of course. We are moving forward with our lessons and find ourselves in the middle of ceramic (clay) artmaking with Kindergarten, First and Second Grades. Third, Fourth and Fifth Grades are in the thick of their printmaking lessons. Here are the inspirations for each grade level's artists: Kindergarten-Aztec Calendar First Grade-Yayoi Kusama's Pumpkins Second Grade-Owl Third Grade-Henri Matisse Fourth Grade-Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Net Paintings Fifth Grade-Pop Art
10/25/2020 Painting our hearts outArtists are spending time quietly painting these days. Seeing students at work learning new skills and using our art materials in new ways has been such a treat. Modifications have been made in every grade level so that students are not sharing supplies as we would usually do. With music playing softly, step by step instructions, and students doing their best the days are flying by. I am reminded all over again that I do have the best job in the world and I am lucky to be doing it at Crabapple Crossing!
10/18/2020 New Routines in the art roomDue to our phased opening of schools, it is the first day of Art for someone everyday. Students who have attended school face to face have already been working on our lesson, while those at home are using their own supplies to create art as well. This necessitated optional activities for "early finishers" as we are not sharing our usual art tools with each other right now. Thanks to the support of our generous PTO, we have a class set of drawing "manikins". Students have been practicing drawing by observing each shape that makes up the figure instead of looking at the figure as a whole and possibly becoming frustrated. We also have a class set of bags of wooden blocks, allowing artists to work as architects do. Students create buildings, bridges, towers, etc. and then draw their architectural creations. It has been so hearwarming to see our artists here at school. I saw this quote recently on social media-"If you can't see my smile, I hope you can see my heart." This perfectly expresses how I feel all day, everyday.
9/27/2020 The Artists are here!Small groups of students are in the Art Room and I couldn't be happier. :) We are being careful with supplies and limiting our contact with each other. Each artist is enjoying their own private Art Island, or having an entire table to themselves. We have been chatting with each other and catching up as well as meeting new friends. We created sketchbook covers last week and starting tomorrow, we will be using our previous knowledge, our art elements and principles, and some new ideas to create artwork together.
