9/20/2020 it's the "first day" of school tomorrow!Students return to the Art Room this week for the first time since March! It is exciting to plan for in person instruction, which will be recorded for those students who will continue to learn from home. This presents another learning opportunity for me, but one that I feel prepared for. We will be changing some of our procedures and of course, adding cleaning and sanitizing protocols. This first week, students and I will spend time familiarizing ourselves with our new routines and creating sketchbooks for storing our artwork and notes. We will also be drawing "selfies". These self-portraits will include our face masks and expressive eyes. It has become more difficult to read other people's expressions these days, so we are going to address that, and also have a little fun with it. Cartoon inspired eyes are perfectly acceptable!
9/11/2020 Universal Remote LearningWe're wrapping up week 4 of Universal Remote Learning here in the Art Room. Students have a weekly prerecorded lesson that correlates with our Georgia Standards of Excellence Visual Arts Curriculum. Recording these lessons has been such a learning experience! I continue to discover ways to improve the process and have enjoyed learning an entirely new way of delivering instruction. By far the best part is interacting with students via Padlet (Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grades) and Flipgrid (3rd, 4th, and 5th Grades). These websites provide students a platform to share their artwork and seeing their sweet faces certainly brightens my days!
Students returned in small groups for short periods of time this week. While it was far from "business as usual", it was wonderful to have children in the building again! Looking forward to seeing more of our students in the coming weeks. 3/30/2020 Robots!if you designed a robot, what jobs would it to for you? This is Mrs. Steffensen's grocery shopping robot. This robot has large tires so that it can travel to Publix. It has long retractable arms so that it can reach items on the higher shelves. Bluetooth will allow Mrs. Steffensen to tell the robot what to buy. When the robot gets to the check out, it can pull out Mrs. Steffensen's debit card to pay for the groceries. The nice people at Publix will put the groceries inside of the robot and it will roll back to Mrs. Steffensen's house. It has a garage door opener built in so that it can go inside the house and put the groceries away. Now design your robot! What are some jobs you wish a robot could do for you? Which lines and shapes will you need to create your robot? Draw your robot and add color with whatever supplies you have at home. Tell me all about it! [email protected] 3/27/2020 Greetings from home! We're just finishing our second week of learning and teaching from home. I brought some things to my house that remind me of the Art Room at school. Things are different, that's for sure! I miss all of my Artist friends so much! But we're going to continue to do our best and keep creating. I will be posting resources here for students and their families. I know there is a lot to do for school and then we are also taking care of each other and ourselves. So just let this be a place to find things to help you use some of your time in Arty ways. As I always say at school, your safety is my #1 job. So be safe and well and see you soon, Mrs. Steffensen 1/12/2020 happy new year! Here are some recent classes of Art Champions. We're doing what we can in the ART Room to promote our January PBIS theme of R-E-S-P-E-C-T. It's also time for sharing our artwork with the community. With exhibits coming up at the Milton Library and the State Capitol, we'll be showcasing some of our amazing student efforts! Here are Shriya and Leo, whose artwork will be featured in the Georgia Art Education Association Capitol Art Exhibit in early March.
9/22/2019 This is what it's all aboutMany times this past week, this Art Teacher was reminded of her number one role at school. Making personal connections is vital to creating the Art program our students and families deserve. Here is one of the reminders. This student visited on Friday morning just to share his drawing (created with a cousin) and discuss his process. Hoping that each and every individual at CCES feels appreciated and heard in the same way.
9/15/2019 Today is International dot day!Peter H. Reynolds' charming tale of a girl named Vashti and her Art teacher inspired our first day of Art lessons this year. "Just make a mark and see where it takes you" encourages all of us to embrace our creative side and trust that we are capable of great things. Each grade level created a standards-based dot and these are now displayed outside of the Art Room. Elements and principles of art and design guided our learning and the process. Check it out below.
8/8/2019 Find art everywhere...Mrs. Steffensen's summer travels took her to Miami, FL, Chicago, IL and Tacoma, WA. The art scene in Miami includes Wynwood Walls, a mostly outdoor space covered with urban graffiti. Artists are given the opportunity to paint one of the walls with the understanding that this is a rotating art exhibit. The walls are periodically painted over to give another group of artists the chance to paint there. The Romero Britto gallery was also visited. Last year's first grade artists studied Britto's art and it was a treat to view some of it in person. In Chicago, Mrs. S and her mom explored Hamilton: The Exhibition. This interactive experience explores the historical context of the Hamilton musical and does an amazing job of making the story relatable to all. In Tacoma, Mrs. S had her best arty adventure yet, taking in the city's glassblowing scene. Acclaimed artist Dale Chihuly has created amazing outdoor glass art and the Museum of Glass is another must-see. Mrs. S was also fortunate enough to have a one-on-one glassblowing session with a glass artist and created a wavy bowl. Photos of these adventures posted below. 4/14/2019 ARt ChampionS!Recent winners of the Trophy! Not going to lie. I may have placed the trophy in a more visible location and used it as an incentive to promote respectful, responsible and safe behavior. :)
4/14/2019 YOuth ARt MOnthDr. Williams and I spent time spreading our arty joyfulness throughout the community to celebrate Youth Art Month. Our student artwork was featured at the Milton Public Library, the State Capitol and Milton Mayor Joe Lockwood's office. One of our student's work was even featured on the cover of the Fulton County Schools Annual Financial Report. I can't think of a better way to advocate for Arts in our schools!
