3/26/2014 "Go West" Part 2Inspired by the exhibit at the High Museum of Art, we created parfleche containers out of brown paper. This involved a lot of folding! Next we added our own design made of geometric shapes. Today, we began painting. 3/14/2014 Technology in the Art RoomThird Grade students are using the iPad and the Active Board to teach each other about perspective. They are taking turns explaining the tricks artists use to show depth. Some of these include size, value, sharpness of details and placement on the picture plane. We are tying all of this in to a lesson that includes art from the Go West! exhibit at the High Museum. We have also discovered an amazing resource in the Nature Valley Trail View initiative (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHnb_srAv_E) which has recorded hikes through some of our National Parks in a Google Maps style. 3/13/2014 "Go West" comes to NWESSecond Graders are studying the parfleche-an envelope like container created by Native Americans from the Plains in the late 1800s. We tried making our own natural paints with berries, dirt and charcoal. Usually we use paint from a bottle, so this was a new experience. We especially disliked the smell of the blackberries after we smushed them! 3/10/2014 Never Stop LearningFor the next several weeks, I will be joining a Fifth Grade Music class as they learn to play the guitar. I played as a middle-schooler, which was a very long time ago! Being completely out of my comfort zone and trying to learn something new reminds me that my Art students must feel this way at times. Feeling grateful for this opportunity!
